MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

As another season ends I would like to thank the committee for all their hard work arranging this year’s very successful Field Trials. As ever the level of competition was high and whether you are a Spaniel or Retriever person a well-trained dog is a pleasure to watch.

We are always looking out for new committee members, a fresh face will bring new ideas, and you don’t need to be a Field Trial standard handler to help; there is a considerable amount of work to do on the day of a Test or Trial, dummy throwers, game carriers and stewards are always in demand. Without these helpers the events could not run and the Society would be just a name.

We meet as committee 3 or 4 times a year, so if anyone feels that they have something to offer, even if it is only time then please come along to the AGM at the Red Lion, Myddle on 6th March 2018, or contact Grace Brown for a nomination form.   Adrian Joynt.

NOVICE A V Retriever results Checkley, 13th Oct

1st Not awarded.

2nd Derek Capel with Flashmount Galliot

3rd Dave Clayton with Klato Firefly

Guns Choice Gareth Lewis and Pherlotte Galaxy of Jatarcon

Thanks judges Kevin Brady, Alan Fryer, Nicola Reynolds and Dave Kirkby who had to make some tough decisions. All the dogs worked well and there was an abundance of partridge, thanks to our host Ivor Beavis. So much game was the undoing of some of the more novice dogs. The team of guns shot really well, hardly missing a bird, so that all the dogs had a splendid opportunity to show their retrieving skills.

Our raffle for the Search and Rescue charity raised a great £68.

OPEN AV RETRIEVER TRIAL, Acton Round, October 2017

2nd and Guns Choice Allie Hogsbjerg and Quarnford Grouse of Rufriver

Thanks to judges Keith Bellamy, Phil Garton, Glenys Caldwell and Mike Allen who put up three worthy dogs. The day was testing on a natural shoot day set up, with birds a bit slow in the morning, but plenty in the afternoon. We thank the Acton Round Shoot and guns for their generosity and patience in allowing us to run our day with them. The dogs showed their steadiness in line and were given some long retrieves on the plough and stubble fields. Many thanks to all the helpers without which we couldn’t run the day and to Barton Ramsey, over from the USA, who carried game, spotted birds down and took photos all day with us. Wendy Pickup and Jan Gannaway-Jones obtained their attendance certificate (for show judges) and certainly earned them, walking miles with us to the various woods. The raffle raised a splendid £113 for our charity Search and Rescue Dogs. Many thanks to our sponsors Skinners Pet foods.

Seminar 12th November 2017 Conformation and Gait
Speaker Karl Jones BSc (Hons), MSc (vet physio), MCSP, HCPC, ACPAT, Chartered Physiotherapist (Kennel & Paddock)

16 eager people arrived to hear Karl speak, some had brought dogs to take part in the practical session which took place in the afternoon. There was a folder for each person which contained notes on the day, the timetable, a Shropshire Gundog Society pen and a car sticker.
We had a strict timetable as there was so much to get through, the day was divided up with tea / coffee breaks and of course a lunch break. Karl proved to be an excellent speaker, he made a heavy topic interesting and easy to understand. People were encouraged to ask questions along the way. The delivery was supported by a Powerpoint presentation, and everybody had a hard copy of the slides so that each could follow the presentation and had the details to take home with them.
Karl spoke on the following:-
What is gait and the components? Types of gait patterns and foot falls
Possible causes for alterations to gait patterns
Last, but not least:- Practical demo of collecting gait analysis and processing
It was fascinating to see dogs being walked and trotted along the pressure mat, the results instantly appearing on the large screen. The mat was connected up to a computer and the computer analysed the footfalls of each dog. It was clear to see when a dog was favouring a particular leg, perhaps the dog stepped slightly short with that leg, or applied more pressure on the mat with a particular foot. Karl interpreted all this information and was able to provide an assessment of each dog’s movement there and then. Sometimes it was not apparent with the naked eye that a dog was not putting his full weight on a given foot, but the computer worked it all out, and with Karl’s skill at interpreting the results we all went away with more knowledge about our dogs and the way they move.
Lunch once again was provided by Carolyn and her husband Bob – we enjoyed a tasty ploughmans lunch with home made apple pie and custard afterwards. Carolyn’s home made mince pies went down well at each tea break. Wendy Pickup.
