2017 AV Spaniel “Spring” Working Test
I’m pleased to report on the 12th March we held our AV Spaniel Spring Working Test at Shadymoor Farm, Stapleton, Shrewsbury by kind permission of Joy and Kevan Fox.
The test was held in extensive woodland with good ground cover, hard going in parts at times this was testing for the dogs, added to this a few pheasants being flushed, and an unplanned water retrieve all added to a great test.
Once again a big thank you to our sponsors Skinners, especially Elizabeth Wooltorton who provided the Certificates, Dog food vouchers for 1st, 2nd & 3rd in both novice and open tests, along with vouchers donated for the raffle.
Thank you to our judges Mr Nick Powell and Mr Steve Brewer who also provided an overview and feedback to the handlers, we had a good entry, 17 for the novice test with awards being presented to the top 3 places, and 10 for the open test with awards being presented to the top 3 places results are detailed below.
The day went well, despite rain being forecasted this held off until last dog had run, weather was perfect for the test, not too hot and dry. The test went smoothly with a run off in the novice novice test for second and third place. A big thank you to all the helpers on the day, without which it would not be possible:-Grace & Chris Brown, Gill & Malcolm Awty, Warren Jones, Gareth Jones, Caroline Beddell, Clare Morris, Paul Woodcock, Neil Davies, Andy Wilson, Jayne Day.
Also an extra thank you to Jayne who made an assortment of lovely sandwiches & Cakes for the Judges and helpers,

A GREAT DAY!
OPEN SHOW MAY 2017
Walford College Campus, Baschurch, Shrewsbury, SY4 2HL.
Once again we are very grateful to Skinners for their most generous sponsorship.
124 classes – 177 dogs entered – 12 different judges.
First time at this venue, and what a beautiful setting! The weather was kind enough for all judging to be held outside on beautifully mown grass. Exhibitors parked their cars on a slightly higher level bank overlooking the 3 rings, with marvellous views across the sports fields and beyond to the Welsh Hills.
Had it rained the Sports Hall was available for our use. There was ample space inside for the three rings, and enough room to accommodate everyone comfortably.
We received very many positive comments regarding the excellent catering, which was available in the nearby permanent Refectory building. There was a very good choice of well cooked breakfast items, then for lunch there was again a good selection, surely something for everyone.
The raffle raised £128 in aid of National Search and Rescue Dogs, the charity chosen at this year’s AGM by members of Shropshire Gundog Society.
Twenty-one breeds were present in the BIS ring, awaiting the attentions of BIS judge Mrs Jill Dixon. Each exhibit was given a careful examination before Mrs Dixon selected 8 for her shortlist: Cocker, Hungarian Vizsla, Weimaraner, Pointer, Welsh Springer, English Springer, Field Spaniel, Curly Coated Retriever.
BIS – Clarke’s English Springer Ternspringer Band Man at Reulemill.
RBIS – Perkins’ Pointer Ir Sh Ch Kanix Fate of Brent JW, ShCM, CW15.
G3 – Byrne & Egan’s Weimaraner Enryb Prosecco Party JW, ShCM.
G4 – Philipson’s Welsh Springer Menstonia Marksman ShCM.
There were 10 puppies competing for BPIS, 6 were shortlisted for further consideration: Labrador, Pointer, Irish Water Spaniel, Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla, Hungarian Vizsla, Sussex Spaniel.
BPIS – Byrne’s Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla Aldozovolgyi-Drotos Nador at Enryb (imp Hungary).
RBPIS – Matthews’ Pointer Millpoint Simply Bootiful with Sonham.
PG3 – Bradbury & Preston’s Sussex Spaniel Serendel Sussex Euphoria at Harasteorra.
PG4 – Perkins’ Hungarian Vizsla Nevedith Strictly Claudia of Brent.
Thank you to everyone who helped at this year’s show, without your input the show could not have gone ahead.
Wendy Pickup Show Manager.
We have had a good turnout of dogs for our training classes this spring. Under the direction of Caroline Davies the Spaniel Classes at Stapleton have encouraged the novice and puppy dogs with some more advanced work for those looking to progress. Caroline added a top-up session which was useful. If you would like to attend further one off sessions please let me know so we can gauge demand.
The Retrievers met at Beckbury and Gill Awty started them off with Warren Jones taking over for the next few sessions. There is another class to go in August so I hope you are all keeping up the practice.
Many thanks to our trainers and the landowners who make it possible for us to put on the classes.
SKINNERS remain one of our main sponsors, and have kindly provided prizes for all our field trials. Laura Peakman, Skinners new representative for our area, is extremely supportive to us and we offer our thanks to her and to Skinners.
